Engine Mechanical problem

1994 Ford E-Series Van  6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

started my van, i heard the fuel pump turn on, than the van started to loose power. I tried it again but the van would not turn over. I heard the fuel pump turn on and stayed on. I tried to start the van for the third time, I heard the fuel pump go on and than off, that is when the van started, then it started to loose power. the check engine light illuminated. I installed a ford code reader, but could read anything because the fuel pump would not shut off.
